Fasting And Weight Loss, Is It For You?

October 27, 2011

Fat Loss Tip That WorksFor those of you who have read the blog you know how much I preach eat small meals every three hours to keep the metabolism elevated.  So, when I heard about Fasting And Weight Loss for an answer to peoples weight loss problems, I was skeptical to say the least.  I didn’t really understand how some people could recommend fasting as a form of permanent weight loss.  I understand in some religious and cultural circles that fasting at times is expected, but for someone trying to get in shape it seemed like a crazy idea.  So, as more people talked to me  about fasting and weight loss, I knew I would have to review the science and methods to see if it could work.  Here are my results.

First of all, I would never recommend fasting as a long term weight solution, because of the tremendous deleterious effects that it could impose on your system.  Breaking down muscle tissue to feed the organs, the headaches from fasting too long, lack of energy and just the desire to eat something would be too much to bear.  However, what if there was a way to fast intermittently and then at times eat whatever you want and still lose weight.  Better yet, lose the stubborn fat that never seems to leave your body by doing those methods…

Well, there could be a way for this to happen.  I know it goes against my firm beliefs and I still think that for long term healthy weight loss sticking to the principles of knowing your calories and eating every 3 hours is still the best.  But what if you were adhering to those principles and still could not lose that last bit of belly fat around your waist.  Better yet, what if your schedule does not allow you to eat every three hours.  There could be an answer in fasting.

The method is simple and is typically geared to fasting about two days per week.  That’s right fasting for 24 hours two times per week, but then being able to go out and eat what you want at times and not really sticking to a diet all day, every day.  The science behind the method stands up and is explained very well by the author of EAT STOP EAT, Brad Pilon.  This program discusses the concepts in greater detail and explains how to couple your workouts with the fasting.  Check out his video, if you haven’t already.

There are some drawbacks in my opinion.  First of all I don’t recommend the diet for a long term weight solution.  However, doing it for 4-5 weeks at a time when trying to lose the last pounds of stubborn belly fat or for kick starting  your efforts, I think it is OK.  Second, some people could get headaches from not eating, but your body should get accustomed to this the longer you do the program.  Finally, it is not something for everyone, as there are a number of people who could not do well with this concept.

However, fasting and weight loss has many benefits.  These can be fast and easy weight loss with less effort in the gym.  It can allow a natural increase in growth hormone that will increase the body’s ability to burn fat and gain muscle.  The concept is easy to follow with allowance of cheat meals throughout the week to keep the eating habits fresh and sustainable for the time you are on the diet.  The cheat meals will also allow you to have a great social life when you just have to go out with friends to unwind and you won’t feel guilty about it.
